ABOUT KATHRYN'S WORK
Born Sydney Australia 1981
Kathryn’s Pop Realism paintings draw on the pulsating energy of Las Vegas, freeze frames of iconic Hollywood cinema, recognizable signage, advertisements and celebrity, all delivered within the realm of ‘Pop’. Sometimes the viewer is drawn into a discourse that pits originality, consumerism, high art, and entertainment against one another with the result often a nod to nostalgia.
Kathryn continues to immerse
herself in her subjects, working both on location in the United States and in the studio as part of her artistic practice.
Kathryn's paintings capture ‘freeze
frame’ moments. Her work introducer's heroes of cinema that with Kathryn’s hand appear elevated even further but at the same time capture a modesty that draws you in, with a glint of revelation that these subjects are not that different
to the everyday man or woman on the street. Her paintings aim to create a sense of escapism and hope for the viewer.
The works blend words,
symbols, icons, and imagery that are saturated with colour and energy. The cleverly calculated curation of these elements can appear as if constructed under conflict. Twisting, intertwining, and wrestling of key pieces are juxtaposed with the harmonious placing of others. This push and pull often delivers its message with such punch and clout, a reminder of a society obsessed with promotion, instant recall, and the fight for brand domination.
Some works reflect an everyday landscape that is really a concealed, but normalized battleground, with the prize the consumers hard earned dollar.
